How to turn on notifications in Kanbei

By Daniel Jimenez, founder of Kanbei · November 3, 2026 · 2 min read

A Kanbei guide — step by step, for organizers.

Kanbei can send announcements, event reminders, and job alerts to your phone or computer as notifications — a short message that appears even when Kanbei is closed. It is one tap per device, and you choose what you hear about in Settings → Notifications. Announcements are always visible inside the app too, so turning notifications off never hides anything.

Step 1: Turn notifications on for this device

In Kanbei, go to Settings → Notifications (or the Announcements page), and tap Turn on notifications. Your browser asks once — tap Allow. That turns notifications on for this device only; a second phone or computer needs the same tap.

Step 2: Choose what you hear about

Under How you hear about things, each row offers its own choices. A new announcement is notifications or off — there is no email choice for it. A scheduled announcement, an event reminder, and a job assigned to you each offer notifications, email, or off. Comments on announcements arrive together in one daily summary instead of one message at a time, and dues overdue in one weekly summary. There is no row for being moved off a waitlist. If you pick notifications but they aren’t set up on any of your devices, Kanbei emails you instead for reminders and job alerts; announcements have no email fallback.

Step 3: On iPhone, add Kanbei to your home screen first

On iPhone, notifications only work if Kanbei is on your home screen — they do not work in a Safari tab. In Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, then Add. Open it from the new icon, sign in, then turn notifications on inside Kanbei (Settings → Notifications). On Android and on a computer, no home-screen step is needed.

Step 4: If notifications stop

If Kanbei says notifications are on but nothing arrives, open Settings → Notifications. If it says Kanbei stopped sending to this device, tap Turn notifications back on. If it says notifications are blocked, allow them in your browser settings — the site can’t ask again once you’ve said no. And remember: on a computer, closing the browser completely stops notifications until you open it again.

Doing this in Kanbei

Settings → Notifications, or the Announcements page → Turn on notifications. Members set their own in the same place on their own page.

Common questions

Do notifications work on iPhone?

Yes, but only if Kanbei is on your home screen. Add it from Safari (Share → Add to Home Screen), open it from the icon, and turn notifications on inside the app. They do not work in a Safari tab.

If I turn off emails, do notifications stop too?

No. Email, text, and notifications are separate — turning one off never turns off the others. To stop notifications, turn them off under Settings → Notifications.

Can Kanbei tell me if a notification arrived?

No. There is no delivery confirmation for web notifications — Kanbei can tell that a message was sent, not that it arrived on your device. If something matters, check it in the app.

I turned notifications on but nothing arrives. What first?

Check Settings → Notifications on that device. If it says Kanbei stopped sending to this device, tap Turn notifications back on. If it says blocked, allow notifications in your browser settings.
