Set up your org with two quick questions

By Daniel Jimenez, founder of Kanbei · November 3, 2026 · 3 min read

A Kanbei guide — step by step, for organizers.

When you create an organization in Kanbei, you answer two quick questions first: what kind of group it is, and which tools you need. Your answers pick your starting template — your starter groups and the words Kanbei uses for them — and exactly which tools appear on your sidebar. Nothing is final, and creating an org is free: subscribing comes only after the org exists.

Question 1: What kind of group is this?

Pick the closest of 15 options: Family, Research team, Band / creative crew, Study group, Volunteer team, Martial-arts class, D&D / gaming group, Daycare / nursery, Small business team, Teacher’s class, Community organizer, Book club, Nonprofit / community club, Small informal group, or Other. Each one starts from a template with starter groups that fit — a martial-arts class starts with different groups than a book club, whose groups are called Circles. Other starts plain, with no assumptions.

Question 2: Which tools do you need?

Tick the tools you want on your sidebar: track dues or fees, check people in at events, coordinate jobs, share files and links, sign-up forms, follow up with people, book rooms, membership levels, or a public page. Your kind of group pre-ticks the usual ones — a volunteer team gets jobs, check-in, forms, and follow-up pre-ticked — and you can change any of them before you continue.

Skipping the questions

Press “Skip the questions” and you get the standard starting point instead: the usual template, with all nine tools on the sidebar. You can still pick a different starting template on the next screen, and change all of it later in Settings.

Changing your mind later

Go to Settings → Tools to turn any tool on or off, and use the sidebar editor (the pencil next to the sidebar) to reorder, rename, or hide sidebar items. Turning a tool off never deletes its data: turn it back on and everything is still there. You can also change your answers from the setup screen before the org is created.

Doing this in Kanbei

Create your org from the Start page (if you already have an account, you’ll go through Onboarding instead). Answer the two questions or skip them, name your org, and you land on your dashboard. One account covers 3 organizations on every plan, and you pay nothing until you subscribe — $20 a month, plus applicable taxes, for the whole organization, or a one-time payment for lifetime access (current price on the Pricing page). Try the same questions in the demo first: “Answer a few quick questions” in the sample-group picker rebuilds the demo with the closest sample group and only the tools you picked.

Common questions

Do I have to answer the setup questions to create an org?

No. Press “Skip the questions” and you get the standard starting point, with all nine tools on the sidebar.

What if my kind of group is not listed?

Pick Other. It starts plain with no tools pre-ticked, and you choose exactly what you need.

If I turn a tool off, do I lose its data?

No. Turning a tool off in Settings → Tools only hides it from the sidebar. Turn it back on and all its data is still there.

Does creating an org cost anything?

No. Creating an org is free. You subscribe only after the org exists, from Pricing or Billing.
